Abstract

|
The purpose of this study is to explore roles of and strategies for Rehabilitation Counselors(RC) in the illness management process with experiences in the U.S. Recovery from severe mental illness(SMI) is a long process that influences individuals’ lives. Among different professionals, RC are in a unique position to assist individuals with SMI in assessing their personal health and integrating vocational counseling services into the individualized recovery plans. Through literature review, the roles of RC were discussed and three possible strategies with one example that would be applied in developing employment plan were provided: 1) Understanding recovery, 2) Stress, drug use, and vulnerability, and 3) Wellness recovery plan. Based on these possible strategies and examples, future research and implication were iscussed.
